Hammes Company Advises OSU on $780 million Medical Center Expansion
BROOKFIELD, Wis. and COLUMBUS, Ohio, September 26, 2007– In March of 2007, after conducting a public open bidding process, the Board of Trustees at The Ohio State University chose Hammes Company to consult on their $780 million medical center expansion.

“Hammes Company was chosen through a competitive process,” says William Shkurti, Senior VP for Business and Finance, The Ohio State University. “We felt they had the experience necessary in facilities and programmatic implications. Their work was timely and balanced and they did a good job in a very challenging situation. We are very happy with the work Hammes Company has done.”

The original plan for the expansion included construction of a new Cancer Hospital, expansion of the Medical Center and Heart Hospital, and additional faculty offices.

Hammes Company was engaged to review The Ohio State University Medical Center (OSUMC) master facility plan and the financial relationship between the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute and all of the other OSUMC facilities. The review used documentation from external data sources and information provided by the University, the Medical Center and the Cancer Hospital. Deloitte & Touche LLP in Detroit was also hired by the OSU board to review the volume and financial projections of the project.

To gain perspective regarding the project and the data provided, Hammes also completed a series of interviews with key individuals at OSU and a number of consultants that work with the University.

In the final report issued to OSU on August 29, Hammes evaluated the University’s strategic initiatives relative to the realities of the market and made recommendations on how to balance the University’s priorities. The report also stressed the importance of a development schedule to reduce the potential impact of escalating construction costs.

“We enjoyed our association with OSU and appreciate the trust they showed in us with this first assignment. We stand ready to provide any additional assistance they may need in the future,” says Mark Coughlin, VP Hammes Company.
