Hammes manages new 1M SF Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare campus

BROOKFIELD, Wis., and ELMHURST, Ill., August 27, 2008 – Leading healthcare facility developer, Hammes Company has been hired by Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare (EMHC) to serve as the project manager for a new acute care hospital building and two new medical office buildings (MOBs). Hammes Company will serve as the Project Manager for the entire project, including all of the strategic and master facility planning, site annexation assistance, operational planning, design and construction oversight.

“We are very excited to be working with EMHC on the new hospital and MOBs,” says Dave Connolly, Vice President, Hammes Company. “In 1995 we developed the Elmhurst Memorial Center of Health, and we’re glad to be back again project managing more than 1 million square feet on this new integrated campus. Because of the extensive amount of time the operations improvement group has spent reviewing their processes and operations, EMHC is truly creating a new way to provide healthcare services to those they serve.”

The new 866,000-square foot, 259-bed acute care hospital will serve as the centerpiece of the 50-acre integrated healthcare campus located near the intersection of York and Roosevelt in Elmhurst, Ill. The building’s interior design will use natural light and other features to create a “non-institutional” feel, and all patient rooms will be private, with amenities such as room service on request. The project broke ground on May 2, 2008 and is planned to open in the fall of 2011.

“Constructing a new campus provides us with the opportunity to build a state-of-the art hospital that meets the needs of our patients, visitors, staff and physicians," says Leo Fronza, President of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. “Our vision for a new facility is about improved performance and teamwork—how we positively impact patient safety, patient satisfaction, and clinical outcomes.”

In keeping with EMHC’s adoption of the Planetree philosophy, the hospital’s design will focus on the patients’ experience. To promote healing of the mind, body and spirit, the hospital will include extensive landscaping and be surrounded by green spaces, ponds and healing gardens to create a building in a garden concept.

In addition to the new hospital, two new 90,000-square foot MOBs are being planned to open on the campus in the fall of 2011 (pending Certificate of Need approvals from the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board). One building will be focused on cardiac care and the other on women’s services and cancer care.
